The first event to honor a new Governor was when Isaac Stevens arrived in Olympia to take over
as the first Territorial Governor in 1853. Olympia residents planned a welcome dinner and reception for the new Governor
at the Gallagher Hotel.
The first Ball after statehood was held in Olympia's Columbia Hall on November 18, 1889. The event followed the
swearing-in ceremony of Elisha P. Ferry, Governor.
During the 1930's the Balls were held in the American Legion Hall, and in the 1940's through 1965 the Olympia Armory
was used. Governor Dan Evans first inaugural ball was held in 1965. For the next 20 years, he and other state elected officials
have been honored at events at the Tyee Motor Inn, St Martin's Capital Pavilion, and the Westwater Inn.
The ball this year will be held at the Legislative Building and the Temple of Justice on the Capitol Campus - Olympia, WA
