Squaxin Island Canoe Family

The Squaxin Island Canoe Family honors and celebrates the rich traditions of Pacific Northwest Native cultures by participating in annual canoe journeys across the inland waterways, connecting with tribes throughout the region and the west coast of Canada. Revitalized in 1995 with the blessing and carving of ancient cedar trees from the Wynoochee Valley, these journeys have become a symbol of unity and resilience. Notably, the Tribe hosted the 2012 Paddle to Squaxin, welcoming over 100 canoes and 30,000 participants. The Canoe Family continues to share their cultural heritage, with their beautifully carved cedar canoe serving as both a traveling ambassador and a centerpiece at the Squaxin Island Museum Library and Research Center.
